Most people don’t realize is that cold sores are actually a highly contagious herpes simplex virus infection (usually HSV-1, or oral herpes) on the lips.They are highly contagious and can be easily spread through kissing, touching, or secondary contact with objects that have come in contact with a cold sore, such as a shared eating utensil, drinking glass, lipstick or washcloth. Treatment Choices for Cold Sores / Oral HerpesIn our practice Dr. Sanderson routinely employs use of Laser technologies for rapid and successful treatment for a variety of oral lesions and ulcerations. Alternative treatments are also made available.Laser Therapy - Treatment of ChoiceDr. Sanderson typically uses the diode or the CO2 laser to treat the lesion for 2 to 4 minutes in a non-contacting mode. The procedure is similar to the treatment of apthous ulcers but have longer treatment times.Pain that resolves or significantly diminishes immediately after treatment usually indicates successful treatment with the first session. If the perception of pain continues, Dr. Sanderson may recommend an additional laser treatment and also initiates drug therapy comprised of Valtrex, a prescribed medication.
